What is rich results?

The short answer

Rich results are enhanced search listings that display extra visual information such as review stars, prices, FAQ dropdowns, or recipe details, generated when a page's eligible structured data helps the engine present the listing in a richer format.

What rich results are

A standard search result shows a title, URL, and description. A rich result adds visual detail drawn from a page's structured data, such as star ratings on a review, price and availability on a product, cook time on a recipe, or an expandable set of FAQ questions.

These enhancements come from schema markup that describes the page's content in a machine-readable format the engine can trust to render directly in the listing.

How structured data enables them

Rich results require valid, eligible structured data on the page, typically written in schema.org vocabulary. The markup must accurately describe visible page content, because marking up information that is not actually on the page violates guidelines and can cost eligibility.

Adding correct markup makes a page eligible, but eligibility is not a guarantee. The engine decides at query time whether to render the rich result, based on relevance, quality, and how the result fits the specific search.

Why they are worth pursuing

Rich results make a listing larger and more informative, which can improve how often searchers notice and choose it. Details like ratings or prices set expectations before the click and help qualified visitors self-select.

Test eligibility with the engine's rich results testing tools and monitor the enhancement reports in Search Console. If markup breaks or content changes, the rich result can disappear, so treat structured data as something to maintain, not set once.

Frequently asked questions

Do rich results guarantee higher rankings?

No. Structured data makes a listing eligible for a richer display but is not a direct ranking factor. Rich results can raise visibility and click appeal, which may indirectly help, but they do not force a higher position.

Why did my rich result disappear?

Common causes include broken or invalid structured data, markup that no longer matches visible content, a guidelines violation, or the engine simply choosing not to render it for a given query.
